How We Calculate Project Costs

Our methodology combines government data, industry standards, and real-time material pricing to give you accurate, actionable cost estimates.

Last updated: February 2026 using BLS, Census Bureau, and industry pricing data.

The Cost Formula

Total Cost = (Materials + Labor + Other) × Regional Multiplier

Every estimate follows this core formula, with each component calculated from verified data sources.

Step-by-Step Calculation

1

Base Material Costs

We aggregate material pricing from major retailers (Home Depot, Lowe's, Menards) and industry distributors. Prices are updated monthly and averaged across budget, standard, and premium tiers.

Example: Hardwood Flooring

  • Budget (Oak): $3-5/sq ft material
  • Standard (Maple, Hickory): $5-8/sq ft material
  • Premium (Walnut, Exotic): $10-15/sq ft material
2

Labor Costs

Labor rates come from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS). We use regional median wages for relevant trades, plus standard contractor markup (15-25%).

Example: Flooring Installer

  • National median: $22.50/hour
  • Estimated time: 0.5 hours/sq ft
  • Labor cost: $11-15/sq ft with markup
3

Regional Adjustment

Costs vary significantly by location. We apply state-level multipliers based on cost-of-living data and regional wage variations from the Census Bureau and BLS.

Regional Multiplier Examples

  • California: 1.25× (25% above national average)
  • Texas: 0.95× (5% below national average)
  • New York: 1.30× (30% above national average)
  • Ohio: 0.90× (10% below national average)

Quality Tiers

We provide estimates for three quality levels. Each tier reflects different material grades and installation complexity.

Budget

0.75× base

Basic materials, standard installation

Standard

1.0× base

Mid-range materials, quality installation

Premium

1.35× base

High-end materials, expert installation

Sample Calculation

Hardwood Floor Installation — 300 sq ft in California

Materials (Standard Oak)$6/sq ft × 300 = $1,800
Labor$6/sq ft × 300 = $1,800
Other (underlayment, trim, waste)10% = $360
Subtotal$3,960
California Multiplier (1.25×)× 1.25
Total Estimate$4,950

Accuracy & Limitations

Our estimates are designed to give you a realistic cost range for planning purposes. Actual costs may vary based on:

  • Site conditions — Difficult access, demolition needs, structural issues
  • Contractor availability — High demand can increase labor costs 10-20%
  • Material fluctuations — Lumber, steel, and other materials can swing 15-25%
  • Permits and inspections — Costs vary by municipality

We recommend getting 2-3 contractor quotes to validate our estimates for your specific project.
